FALL in love! Great new looks for the Autumn bride...

With some new 2010 arrivals from Pronovias, La Sposa, Maggie Sottero and more, we wanted to share with you some of our new favorites at the moment that are gorgeous for a fall/winter wedding.

Royal satin meets stunning design in the gown pictured top right. It is absolutely breathtaking! With a dramatic five foot train lined from top to bottom with satin covered buttons, this dress makes for an extraordinary entrance. This gown demands attention and the shorter bodice accentuates the smallest part of the waist. The fuller a-line style skirt offers ample volume and the train trails beautifully behind making this a perfect gown for a larger venue. Although this gown boasts clean lines and simpler details brides will be far from plain in this fabulous dress!

Also on the top of our list is the shimmer satin one shoulder strap gown pictured far left. With a rich and creamy 'alabaster' color option (we have it in store), the impeccable strap and applique pairing with pewter accented stitching, sparkling crystals, smoky pearls and rhinestones offers a charming look for the 'romantic' at heart. It's all about the Grecian inspired 'one shoulder wonders' this year and we welcome the comeback!

FAQ's

We thought you would appreciate knowing some of our answers to FAQ's ahead of time. There is a lot to consider when shopping for your big day so we hope this helps!

#1 “How long does it take to order a wedding gown?”

This depends on the designer but it generally takes 4-6 months to order a wedding gown. You also want to give yourself at least one month for alterations so brides should give themselves seven months as a time frame.

#2 “How long do alterations take?”

This depends on the dress. The more ornate the gown - embellishments, lace, appliqués, etc - the more time will be needed for the job. If a tailor needs to unstitch lace hems with a lot of beadwork he or she needs to reattach it and sew the beads back on so this can be quite labor intensive. One month is plenty of time for alterations however and for a simpler job (a hem on a simple skirt or a bustle) a few days should suffice. We think it’s best to err on the side of caution so the more time you give yourself the better.

#3 “I just received my wedding gown – when should I get my alterations?”

We recommend that you do not get your alterations until one month before your wedding. Most brides ‘downsize’ shortly before the wedding due to stress or a vigorous work out regime (brides are the most motivated right before the wedding) and believe it or not we have seen dresses let out only to be taken in again due to weight fluctuation. Not only does this hurt the wallet but it adds unnecessary stress. Relax and take a load off!

#4 “I just got my dress and it’s too tight!”

More often than not, brides measure ‘in between’ sizes. For brides who are not a perfect 8 or 12 this means that alterations are required regardless of what size has been ordered for you. You usually have about an inch and a half on both sides of the garment to let it out (of course this depends on the gown) and often times it is a matter of letting the dress out an inch here or there for a ‘fit like a glove.’ Of course, this works the other way around too so if your gown is too big in the bust it will need to be taken in. With a corset you have a bit more flexibility than a zipper as you can ‘tighten the strings’ for a custom fit. Sometimes a loose bust can be fixed by adding cups into the dress as a built in bra. Any seamstress will have a range of different sized cups in store.

#5 “I just received my dress that I ordered online and I don’t like it! I’m getting married next week can you help me?”

Yes! The ever present owners Emily and Mary are very selective about which gowns they choose. There is a wide selection of beautiful designer gowns at Blush – Pronovias, La Sposa, Martina Liana, Maggie Sottero – that are available ‘off the rack’. It is also worth mentioning that some of the gowns available for purchasing are brand new. We have helped many brides who have purchased online or bought an imitation gown and are not satisfied with the garment. Please keep in mind that alterations are required when you buy off the rack as the perfect size is extremely rare. Depending on the condition of the gown, we are usually able to offer a discount when buying a sample dress which we hope will make up for the cost of the alterations. We are dedicated to helping you find a dress that you will love so don’t hesitate to ask us if you are in this situation.

#6 “Do you have any gowns with straps?”

Blush carries a lot of gowns with straps however many gowns are featured without straps as they get lost so easily in our busy little boutique. If you are in love with a dress and it does not have straps don’t sweat the small stuff! Many brides will use the hem from the skirt to fashion any strap they want – spaghetti, halter, cap sleeve. Remember, almost anything can be done to a dress in alterations so why not make it couture and personalized!

#7 "Is it possible to buy a jacket with my dress?"

Of course. We sell lace boleros and three quarter length jackets (see silk dupionni jacket and dress pairing pictured above). We also have a lot of mothers of brides and grooms looking for something with a bit more coverage on top so let us know what you are looking for and we will help you find the right look. We also have a gorgeous selection of pashminas and stoles in stock for anyone to choose from.

New 2010 "Martina Liana" has arrived!

Luxurious fabrics, Swarovski crystal embellishments and innate attention to detail are some of the key nuances of a design by Martina Liana. We are pleased to announce that some of the most beautiful gowns from the 2010 collection have arrived to Blush!

Pictured here are some ‘Boutique favorites’. Bottom right is a stunning two piece with a removable silk skirt(see photo on the left sans skirt). This gown is perfect for a dramatic ceremony followed by a cocktail reception or for that destination wedding where two looks goes a long way. We are seeing an increasing amount of brides requesting versatile looks to reflect their personality and wedding venue. In the case of this gown, fun, glamour and charm blend together to make a suave and exciting new look. We have never seen a gown like it and for the fashionista who craves adventure (and wants to rock her shoes) we are certain you will love this striking new design!

Also featured here (center) is an ethereal looking gown made out of Charmeuse (a soft, light weight and drapable fabric) with a tulle overlay which gives a gorgeous silhouette to this empire shape. It is a flattering 'Greek goddess' design suitable for a venue boasting a blue ocean and white sand. The intricate hand sewn belt adorned with Swarovski crystals with pewter accents (featured under the bust) is also a testimate to the global couture glamour of a design by Martina Liana!

As for the rest of the gowns pictured here, we hope that the photos speak for themselves but your best bet is to come downtown Victoria and try them on for size!

New stock is 'hot to trot'

If you love exquisite detail, unique design and beautiful silhouettes then you will love our new stock at Blush! For those who appreciate couture gowns (and want a sneak preview of the 2010 Maggie Sottero collection) come on down and see what’s shiny and new at the boutique!

We love this sculpted beauty pictured bottom left. The color is stunning in creamy ivory with latte accents and the carefully hand sewn crystal clusters offer a subtle sparkle. This gown is made out of a crisp and full bodied French taffeta and has ruching down the bodice and a very flattering ‘fit and flare’ shape perfect for a curvy figure. The drop waist is bordered with a gorgeous gathering of flowers and a splash of color which is the perfect accompaniment to this otherwise simple gown. This design melds together elegance and fun to make a flirty bridal fashion statement. It’s a ‘wow factor’ dress without the overstated fuss and we adore it!

The ‘princess ballerina’ gown pictured above is already a boutique favorite. With lace, beading, organza, tulle and a satin sash, one cannot help but to feel like a high fashion Cinderella hitting the runway to meet her modern prince. This design is a beautiful silhouette and the big volume skirt is not only great for a 'ball room' wedding but it also accentuates a small waist which makes for a tiny ‘top’. For volumptious ‘bottoms’ this dress is very complimentary. The sweetheart bust line and bejeweled bodice dazzles and the soft and billowing skirt is a perfect balance. It's a stunning medley of textiles, and yes, we’re crazy about this dress!

Blush Bridal Boutique's #1 tip: One must never judge a dress on its hanger, it MUST be tried on! Book your appointment today and 'be one' with our newest designer gowns at Blush.

Ooh La La

Ooh La La Bakery rocked our world (and those in it) during Maggie May Day at Blush. We had so many compliments on the mini cupcakes and the adorable Bride and Groom center piece (which I know was super delicious because I took the two home and my hubby and I ate them). Yum. Major props to the gals at Ooh la la Bakery (Hillside and Cedar Hill) for making our party a success! If you are looking for an ever so cute and cool way to impress your guests definitely look these guys up (it also happens that you will receive excellent and prompt customer service with your morsels of sugary perfection which is always a bonus). www.oohlalacupcakes.ca

A special thanks to our styling neighbors at Ginger Hair Salon for donating an 'Up Do'. Keep posted for winners of the Maggie May Day draw coming soon...

Also worth mentioning is the beautiful floral arrangement from our fragrant friends at "Poppies" on Yates street. They also make unique corsage bracelets spun on colored wire to funk things up for grads.

Thank you all for coming down to Blush and swinging into Spring with us!

P.S. We also wanted to welcome Mrs. "Taylor" back from her honeymoon in Mexico! Pictured above is our lovely Lydia with rosy cheeks (her version of a tan) and another ring on her finger!

Stay tuned for more news from Blush...

An Ode to Luke and Lydia

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Lydia.
She was not a damsel in distress.
She had blonde hair and rosy cheeks
And blue eyes that sparkled like the moon over water.

She had big dreams of a beautiful wedding with her in it,
And she dreamed in colors of purple and ivory.
In between sleep and waking she saw things in lace and tulle.
She saw her prince charming standing at the alter too;
He was rocking to the beat of a familiar tune -
There were drums and an electric guitar hum and the feeling was nostalgic.

Lydia was a good spelling bee but that’s not why they called her “Speller”.
She buzzed about busily until she met her honey "Taylor".
He was the pollen to her ‘fleur’ and a clever prince indeed.
From a seed their love would grow into an ever blooming blossom tree.

One sunny day Luke proposed during a game of scrabble: “Will you marry me?”
“Of course!” she declared with black letters inside white squares.
There was a sweet celebration and all of her dreams came true;
There was even the smallest pair of the cutest purple shoes.

After all of that waiting now you can finally go (exit Lydia in her ivory Lela Rose)
To the Mayan Riviera in sunny Mexico!
It was her first time flying and so he held her hand so tight -
Be one with the sunset and enjoy your short flight!
All the best to you Lydia, all the best to you Luke!
May all of your dreams as a love team come true!

Friends of Blush!

We have our very own 'yellow pages' at Blush (okay, we admit they are pink) featuring the businesses of some of our dear patrons and friends in the community. This blog entry is dedicated to some of our favorites at the moment which we would like to share with you for your own enjoyment. Prepare yourself because we are going to hook you up with some real gems! Ready, set go…

We love She She! For those of you who are not already in the know, She She Shoes is located down quaint little (and oh so lovely) Trounce alley downtown Victoria. Owner (Shelagh) is as friendly as they come and despite all of the high end goodies, there is zero pretension in her two fabulous stores. Searching for some wedding shoes? There are also deals to be had so look for sale items. If you would like a purse to match the shoes (bah, who says wedding shoes can’t be worn again?) you can skip, hop and jump over to View street to the glittering bag locale and prepare to short circuit. Much like a kid in a candy store, there are plenty of shiny and beautiful objects to gawk at. The ladies at Blush are sporting some “Big Buddha” designer handbags at the moment (we couldn’t resist). The perfect Saturday afternoon? Shopping at She She Shoes followed by lunch at the Tapas Bar. Yum. For email enquiries: info@sheshebags.ca.

Looking for a fabulous (and wonderfully unique) way to treat those hard working bridesmaids? We encourage you to ‘rock out' at Skanda where you might recognize the “crafting just became sexy” motto of these beading divas. Delve into your creative side with dynamic jewelry making classes on Fort street with the ladies at Skanda (who also happen to be instantly likable, fun and as down to earth as the rare gemstones shimmering in the display case). To co-design with these creative cats or for more information on classes visit: www.skanda.ca.

Last but certainly not least, we would like to recommend a visit to Lebi Healing Arts in beautiful Fairfield to tame those pre-wedding jitters. R.Ac Illya Borreson has recently opened his doors after a long stint in China. Illya offers ‘couples acupuncture’ in an intimate spa setting (see picture above) so you can cozy up with your loved one and release all of that 'nervous energy’. For those of you who have never experienced a traditional Chinese massage you do not know what you are missing! Illya’s amazing body work comes without the spa prices and he also happens to specialize in weight loss and body reshaping acupuncture. Let it all go at this peaceful little home studio. For bookings email: info@lebihealingarts.com.

Whether you are in need of some healing hands, itching to explore your creative side or looking for a good old fashioned ‘shop until you drop’ session, we highly recommend that you give these places a try. You will not be disappointed!

Stay tuned for more ‘friends of Blush’ updates. Wanna be a friend? Drop off your details to our boutique next time you visit us.

Brides on a budget...

Given the current recession, we are all hyper aware of the financial anxieties looming out there. It is easy to cut some costs - from cooking at home more often to opting for the great outdoors when it comes to recreation – but most of us still get a bit wary when it comes to the point of purchasing. So where does this leave women on a budget shopping for their ‘once and a lifetime’ wedding gown?

Many customers who visit our boutique have tight purse strings and we completely understand. At Blush, we pride ourselves on the wide selection of beautiful and reputable lines that we carry. If you have fallen in love with a gown but cringed at the price tag, please don’t feel discouraged or intimidated because we can still help you find the perfect dress for your special day.

All we need to know is your price range and what inspires you (many of our customers bring in pictures from magazines) and we will give you some gorgeous alternatives. We are pleased to let you know that we offer a wide selection of dresses (some starting at $190) by celebrated fashion designers - Lela Rose, Alfred Sung, Venus, Dessy - and we are also happy to offer some of our higher end gowns ‘off the rack’ at a generously discounted price. Whether your budget is $200 or $2000, we will have something special in store for you.

As professionals in the bridal industry, we sometimes hear about outlets claiming to have access to high-end designers at a fraction of the retail cost. In times like these, it may be tempting to ignore the ‘too good to be true” rule of thumb! Whether or not you are considering such an outlet, please heed our concerns first.

At our shop, we sometimes find ourselves in an unfortunate “disaster management position” as we try to help brides who are horribly disappointed with their imitation gown. More often than not, these brides have originally fallen in love with the real thing at a bridal shop but were shy of the designer price. They explore other 'avenues' hoping to get the same dress for less. When that does not happen, panic sets in and a replacement gown is needed fast.

The most common complaint about knock offs is that the fit is not even close to the original design or that the textiles feel “cheap”. This is because they are cheap! One of the ways that these operators have cut their costs is by substituting materials with lower cost textiles and beading. When viewing a photo online or even a sample floor model, it is virtually impossible to see the difference in quality. However, try to imagine the look and feel of silk chiffon and now think about a crunchy synthetic material posing to have the same beautiful draping effect. 'Impostor' fabrics are not only hard on the eye but they feel very rough on sensitive skin and they make for a completely different fit. Similarly, plastic beads do not give off the same sparkle as Swarovksi crystals or Rhinestones. If you appreciate a designer gown because of its beautiful movement or the way it picks up the light, quality textiles play a major role here - they cannot be substituted.

Another common complaint about imitation gowns is that they are the wrong color. This is because there is often little to no quality control and a lack of consistency between gowns because the factory is often working from a photo! Ivory becomes yellow, light gold becomes the color of grandma’s pantyhose and white becomes so blue-white that a pair of UV protection sunglasses are needed just to look at the gown. You are supposed to feel amazing on your wedding day - not self-conscious in a dress that is less than satisfactory.

There is nothing wrong with searching for the best possible deal but don’t let anyone mislead you. We at Blush want you to look back on your wedding day in years to come and feel great about your dress and your choice. If you have a champagne taste but happen to be on a beer budget, there is still fine wine to be had that won’t break the bank! Name your price and we’ll find you something with an exquisite nose, delicious taste notes and a beautiful finish. Book a free consultation with the ladies at Blush and we will show you a variety of beautiful gowns in your price range!

Back from the Market!

Spring has sprung at Blush regardless of what the temperature is outside.
Emily and Mary (owners) are back from the market and oh have they brought gifts. The vendors market in Vancouver was a hot spot this year abundant with innovative designs, jewelry and ‘must have’ accessories. Featured here is a new dress by Lovely Girl (isn't it darling?) and while we have several more styles in this collection they are quickly flying off the rack. These little numbers are starting at $80 - if it was Christmas, we’d be stuffing our stockings full - and they also happen to be super comfortable to wear. Pair these cottons cuties with jeans and flats (or come summer with bare legs and strappy sandals) and get your Lovely Girl groove on! Visit Blush today to get inspired for a new season and see our ever growing collection of fabulous cocktail rings, clutches, earrings and other goodies (did I mention we also have some new pashminas and beautifully patterned scarves too?)

Go Grads!

You're nearly there...

Although it still feels like winter outside, there is no doubt that prom is bountiful in the air. Many grads are visiting our boutique - some in a bit of a tizzy - eager to find that perfect dress. For many girls, time is certainly of the essence. Depending on the designer, it usually takes two-three months to process an order. However, there may still be time to order your favorite gown so don’t sweat the small stuff!

Thankfully, we are able to rush some orders for an additional fee of $50 so that you will receive your dress well before your big day. Alas, if the proverbial carriage has indeed turned into a pumpkin, we are happy to announce that we have just received some beautiful gowns available to purchase 'off the rack'. Many girls are pleased to learn that these fresh new dresses have never been worn or ordered before (they are exclusive to Blush) so we can confidently award you an A+ for uniqueness should you decide on one of these new stunners! Grads also take solace in our registry program which does not allow us to sell the same dress twice to the same school (not even in another color!). Pictured above is a new satin gown (size 14) by celebrated designer Pronovias (Barcelona). We love the unique and flattering bust line of this gown and the beautiful beading detail underneath. This elegant design is so stunning that we think it would have been ‘Oscar worthy’ and then some - it definitely scores high on the Blush buzz-o-meter!

Also worth mentioning are the other gowns by Pronovias hot in the shop. With decadent fabrics (silk chiffon), exquisite bead work and vibrant colors, who knew it would be so easily to pull off the beautiful 'Bollywood princess’ look? Looking for a Cinderella cupcake dress to pair with those sparkling glass slippers (hey, you never know!)- we have the perfect fairytale dress for your once in a lifetime ‘ball room dance'. Also still available is a size 10 gorgeous purple iridescent taffeta mermaid gown with an applique train and a lace up corset (cinches the waist line and makes for a curvalicious figure).

If you are looking for something a bit more subdued we also carry a lot of evening gowns with simple lines and creamy feeling fabrics. Bear in mind that if your 'off the rack' dress does not fit you perfectly (even if it is five sizes too big) a little nip and tuck by a third party seamstress will make it ‘fit like a glove’. So please ladies, don’t be shy! Advise us with your details (your grad date and high school) and we will find you an amazing dress and the best accessories for your very special night of glitz and glamour. A big congratulations to you all from the gals at Blush!

Bridal fashion flare: Flowers, feathers and more…

The modern day bride has a lot of options when it comes to her overall look. Fusing together the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ is a popular trend that makes for a lot of interesting choices. Drawing from tradition, we see a lot of brides incorporating that ‘something blue’ or long cathedral veils with big silhouettes and blushers. To pair these more traditional looks with contemporary flare (dramatic headpieces, peacock feathers, silk flowers, chunky accessories and pink, gold, oyster or champagne colored gowns) is a popular choice for many brides.

Making an exciting fashion comeback is the 30’s inspired feather birdcage. We love the modern look of Martina Liana’s casual yet gorgeous dupioni silk gown (with pockets!) paired with a structured birdcage. This intriguing look melds together vintage and contemporary styles. To add more romance, an antique lace veil paired with a sleek and modern gown like “Diamante” (a design by Pronovias noted for its elegance and clean lines) is also an exceptional choice. A lot of brides are also wearing veils low (just above the bun) adding a modern twist to a traditional look. To complete your beautiful ensemble, add a whimsical rhinestone headpiece (pictured above is the new tiara and then some) for equal parts ‘princess’ and ‘grace’. Different shapes and sizes are also hitting the pages of trendy fashion magazines: daring knee length gowns with lots of skirt and tulle, antique lace, full volume pick-ups and ‘off the shoulder’ bohemian chic.

Whether you are looking for a gown with simple lines or plenty of ‘princess poof’, visit our boutique to experiment with these dynamic new looks. Who knows, you might just tap into your inner glamour queen of the 30’s! At Blush, it’s all about making your hunt for the perfect treasure fun while giving you professional feedback and a variety of choices. Call us today to book your personalized appointment!

Gorgeous, elegant and ‘beachy’, these stunning new designs are perfect for destination weddings of sun, sea and sand between the toes. With simple lines, empire waists and flowing fabrics of silk and chiffon, one cannot help but to surrender to her inner goddess in Selina and we at Blush happen to love watching this transformation!

Pictured here is a new addition to our boutique which feels as lovely on as it looks here in the photo. The simple yet rich detail of the thick ivory double border adds weight to the otherwise loose skirt. The silk trim paired with the gathered ribbon underneath the bust line are simple touches that add just enough elegance and structure to give this soft dress a ‘bridal’ feel. We also think that a flower in the hair and a strand of chunky pearls compliment this feminine and down-to-earth look. Visit our boutique to see this fabulous collection for yourself!
